First child vaccinated Diamyd (R) study to prevent diabetes
Diamyd Medical announced today that the first children were vaccinated in a study on diabetes prevention with vaccine Diamyd (R). The objective of this study is to determine whether vaccination with Diamyd (R) can prevent or delay children with a high risk of developing type 1 diabetes, the disease. This is the first time the vaccine is tested to prevent this chronic disease.
Children participating in the Diamyd (r) of the study had a high risk of developing type 1 diabetes. She concluded that all processes have an autoimmune disease where insulin-producing cells are destroyed by their own immune system. If the destruction is not stopped, eventually lead to diabetes May 1. Today, there is no treatment that can prevent progression of the disease.
“We are waiting for treatment with Diamyd (R) will change this situation so that the future could help children before developing type 1 diabetes,” says Helena Elding Larsson, UMAS pediatrician at the University Hospital Malmö and researcher at Lund University. “So far, three children were treated with two injections of each of Diamyd (R) vaccine or placebo,” said Elding Larsson.
The objective is to determine whether vaccination with Diamyd (R) could delay or halt the progression of the disease, so that children do not develop type 1 diabetes. Diamyd doctor reported March 4 this year that the Medical Products Agency of Sweden approved the study.
“If the Diamyd (R) vaccine could prevent or delay the serious disease which mainly affects children and adolescents, we are faced with a medical breakthrough,” says Elisabeth Lindner, President and CEO of Diamyd Medical.
The study, which is the first of its kind, is the double-blind, controlled against placebo, and includes a total of 50 children aged four and above. Half of the children receive two injections of Diamyd (R) vaccine, and the other half received a placebo (inactive medication).
In type 1 diabetes, children of blood glucose should be checked and must take insulin injections several times a day, while special attention should be paid to diet and exercise. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease for which there is currently no cure. The disease must be strictly controlled to avoid serious complications associated with diabetes.
A few studies in order to prevent type 1 diabetes have been conducted around the world, but nobody has been able to affect the progression of the disease. Researchers have long been convinced that the active substance in Diamyd (R) (GAD) can prevent type 1 diabetes. Now, drug development has progressed enough to begin a study on prevention among children.
