Men in Northern Ireland are risking their lives by ignoring the early warnings, the British Medical Association (BMA) warned today.
To counteract this, the BMA is working with the Forum for the Health of Women in Ireland for the men in this challenge to take care of their health. This challenge has been to promote Men’s Health Week, which starts today.
The central question for the week of the Women’s Health 2009 “Men and access to services” – to the people here to stop ignoring the health problems and seek help as soon as possible. It is also expected that the health care, what kind of services that are more vulnerable than men.
Dr Ian Banks, BMA spokesman for the health problems of men and Chairman of Men’s Health Forum, said: “Men need to contact your doctor as soon as possible if you have questions about your health.
“It is a real problem for doctors that men consult their doctor immediately if they become ill. This leads to a delayed diagnosis of serious diseases. Treatment at an earlier stage could lead to improved long-term outcome of certain diseases such as diabetes or testicular cancer.”
Noel Richardson, president of the Women’s Health Forum in Ireland, said that men must change their attitude to help, for medical claims.
He said: “The sick or go to the doctor, should not be regarded as a personal weakness or effeminate. The consequences of no treatment at an early stage could be crucial.
“Men need a challenge to their health and visit the GP not the things now, maybe until it’s too late.”
Statistics serious state of health of people in Northern Ireland, with male life expectancy nearly five years lower life expectancy than women.
Young men, aged 18 to 35 are almost four times more likely to die earlier than women of the same age.
In relation to the disease, there are 14% more cancers in men than in women – a 40% increase in deaths, with lung cancer the most common. In the past 10 years, from prostate cancer fell by 46%, while testicular cancer has increased by almost 58%. In addition, almost 1,500 people die from heart disease each year.
The suicide rate among men in Northern Ireland is also of concern, 18.3 cases per 100,000 from 5.6 cases per 100,000 among women. And in relation to legal drugs, men drink approximately three times more alcohol than women who experience more negative consequences, while the prevalence of smoking among men 28%.
